Three Montreal families are on the street after a fire broke out at a restaurant in a residential and commercial building in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood.

An emergency call reported a fire that broke out just after 2am in the basement of the Grillades La Mamma restaurant on rue Beaubien Est, near Boulevard Langelier.

When around 40 firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) arrived at the scene, thick smoke was pouring out of the three-story building.

The blaze was quickly brought under control by firefighters, but three families were evacuated to receive care from the Canadian Red Cross, a SIM spokesman said.

We do not currently know the extent of the damage or the nature of the fire, although SIM did not refer the investigation to the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

Several restaurants have recently been targeted by Molotov cocktails, particularly in the Saint-Laurent neighborhood, prompting Montreal police to investigate.
