Three solutions to limit construction sites in Montreal

The proliferation of construction sites in Montreal — particularly downtown — is forcing the city and local stakeholders to find a better way to manage the work.

On the occasion of Thursday’s roadworks summit, the city of Montreal is proposing three solutions to limit the number of orange cones on the streets.

1) Maximum 12 hours for erecting and dismantling the signage

The Plante administration no longer wants construction sites to be set up too long before work begins and withdrawal from the site to take so long.

According to the city, this measure could reduce ghost construction sites and clear public roads and sidewalks more quickly.

2) More power for Mobility Squad

Founded in 2018, the Mobility Squad roams the streets of the metropolis to limit obstacles. During her visit, she had to save almost 3,122 useless beacons and traffic signs.

The city therefore wants to allow its force to demobilize inactive sites and revoke usage permits after two unjustified notifications of inactivity.

3) Bigger fines

To ensure these measures are upheld, the City of Montreal plans to increase the number of insults issued by the Mobility Commission.

The amount of the fines will be discussed at the construction sites during the all-day summit.
