In the annual Times Higher Education Ranking, three Austrian universities are among the top 200 for the first time. The University of Vienna is ranked 124th.

In addition to the University of Vienna, which climbed 13 places to 124th place this year, and the Medical University of Graz, which climbed 28 places to 168th place, the Medical University of Vienna also entered this group in the ranking published on Wednesday. He rose from positions 201-250 (from 201 is ranked in increments of 50, then in 100s and 200s) to 194th place.

This means that the University of Vienna has also moved a little closer to the goal of the Austrian research strategy: it aims to have two Austrian universities in the top 100 by 2030.

Innsbruck Medical University at places 201-250

As in the previous year’s ranking, the Medical University of Innsbruck was ranked 201-250. The universities of Innsbruck and Klagenfurt, as well as the Technical University (TU) of Vienna, ranked between 401 and 500. While the two universities in Tyrol and the federal capital remained stable, the University of Klagenfurt was the only Austrian university to do so. something in the top 1000 down (previous year: 351-400).

University of Linz has risen to places 501-600

The University of Linz, on the other hand, won places – it rose from places 601-800 to 501-600. The University of Graz and the Graz University of Technology remained in the 601-800 range, and the University of Salzburg (last unranked) recently entered this group. Montanuni Leoben dropped from the top 1,000.

First place goes to Oxford University

The first place in the Times ranking went to the University of Oxford (Great Britain) for the seventh time in a row. Harvard University (USA) follows in second place, followed by Cambridge University (Great Britain) and Stanford University (USA) in third place. The best continental European and German-speaking university is ETH Zurich (Switzerland) in eleventh place, and the best German university is TU Munich in 30th place.

1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions were evaluated for the ranking. The ranking is based on 13 indicators in the areas of research, teaching, citations, internationalization and fundraising from third-party companies. This time, among other things, 121 million citations of scientific publications were analyzed and 40,000 scientists worldwide were questioned.
