The 25-year-old tries not to think too much about the many trade rumors floating around him. His agent Claude Lemieux also indicated in early January that his clan was “realistic” about the future of the Swiss.
“It’s definitely not easy. It’s a difficult part of our job. Sometimes you have to remember to keep your mind on the task at hand and not get too crazy in your head and just get on the ice and have fun,” Meier told NHL.com.
Meier is in the final year of a four-year deal he signed in 2019. He will become a restricted free agent next season.
This year Meier is having a good time with the California team. In 53 games in 2015, the Sharks’ first pick averaged 51 points, including 33 goals.
The former Halifax Mooseheads and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies said he briefly discussed his situation with teammate Erik Karlsson, who is in the same boat. Trade rumors about Karlsson have been circulating since last week.
“I had conversations with my teammates, they helped me as best they could. But I don’t like bringing up the subject with them. I’m trying to deal with being a professional on my own and understanding that I owe it to my teammates to get out on the ice every day and do my best.”
The Sharks are having a pretty tough season. They currently sit seventh in the Pacific Division, 17 points behind the last spot that would allow entry to the post-season playoffs. David Quinn’s team is a record 16-26-11 in 53 games.
