Tired of job offers with no salary

No more job offers where the salary is not displayed. At least, that’s what more than 76% of Quebecers want, according to a Léger poll commissioned by Talent The newspaper.

“It’s on everyone’s lips. Candidates want salary transparency. Quebecers have an appetite for it,” says Yannick Paradis, Director of Sales Canada at Talent.com.

“At some point the government has to decide,” he adds.

Transparency in times of scarcity

Talent.com is the former Neuvoo job board in which Caisse de depot et placement du Québec (CDPQ) invested $42 million last March, bringing its total stake in the company to $95 million.

However, amid the labor shortage, Talent.com and YPR commissioned Léger to survey 1,061 Quebecers online to find out how they felt about the concept of pay transparency.

Overall, more than 76% supported passing legislation to force employers to include a salary range in their job ad.

“That’s the debate of the day. On the other hand, we have the feeling that employers are not necessarily ready, even if the candidates are,” explains Yannick Paradis.

“I don’t think companies don’t want that, but they need to be managed,” he continues.

In his opinion, transparency goes beyond salary and should also include all the benefits associated with the respective position.

fairer

According to the survey, more than 63% even assume that this transparency would improve gender equality, but also 56% for minorities.

However, only 43% of respondents would feel comfortable with their own salary being published overnight.

The survey also shows that 22% believe they have already been victims of salary discrimination.

While more than 90% of all Canadians think knowing salary is “important” before applying for a job, Quebec could take inspiration from other jurisdictions to go a long way.

“New York made it mandatory in November. Colorado already has it. California too. We can draw inspiration from these jurisdictions. It will come one day,” he concludes.

There were 252,000 job vacancies in Quebec in the second quarter of the year. Hourly compensation for all open positions increased 5% to $22.81 compared to the year-ago quarter.
