A tourist submarine that was used to travel to Titanic’s sinking area has disappeared in the Atlantic off North America.
A worrying disappearance in the Atlantic. The US Coast Guard said Monday it launched a search and rescue mission to locate a small tourist submarine headed to the Titanic sinking area off the coast of North America.
“We’re looking for him,” an official with the Boston Coast Guard Rescue Mission Coordination Center told AFP, confirming press reports. Canada is also involved and is helping the search with a boat and an airplane, the Canadian Coast Guard told AFP. The mobilized boat “was off eastern Newfoundland and making its way to the search area,” they said.
Without saying how many people were on board, the company that organized this voyage, OceanGate Expeditions, said in a press release that it was “assessing and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely.” According to the Guardian, there are five people on board the submarine.
The wreck of the Titanic, which sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg, was discovered in 1985 400 miles off the Canadian coast at 13,000 feet in international waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
