By Anupam Mishra: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has distanced itself from statements by its MP Shatrughan Sinha welcoming Congressman Rahul Gandhi and his Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Shatrughan Sinha called the former Congress chief’s yatra “revolutionary” and said: “Rahul Gandhi has become a youth icon. His image has now completely changed, unlike that of the country’s serious leader before.”

Sinha further said, “Rahul Gandhi has the ability to become prime minister. People from his family have served the nation as prime ministers and contributed to the growth of the country.”

In response, TMC said that Shatrughan Sinha made the statements of her own free will and that the party does not endorse them.

The TMC, which has been at the forefront of assembling an anti-BJP coalition of “like-minded parties,” said all parties should be consulted before announcing a leader as prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

“Congress should first unite the party and save it from disintegration. TMC has made it clear that all anti-BJP parties must fight and win in their own strongholds and then a decision will be made on the prime minister,” TMC Sen’s Shantanu told India Today.

Shatrughan Sinha is among many leaders and significant faces who have supported the Bharat Jodo Yatra which aims to cover over 3,500km across the country.

Also on Christmas Eve, actor and politician Kamal Haasan joined Rahul Gandhi at the Red Fort to show his support for the march. On Sunday, former army chief General Deepak Kapoor and other former army officers were seen marching with Gandhi in Haryana.

The yatra, set up to revitalize Congress’ connection with the masses, is scheduled to conclude in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar later this month.
