TO SEE | A resident’s open landfill disrupts a neighborhood in Gaspésie –

A Carleton-sur-Mer citizen has turned his backyard into a veritable urban dump, testing the patience of some.

Sylvain Boudreau, whose home is near the makeshift landfill, regrets the situation and asks the relevant authorities to take charge of the file.

“He doesn’t put garbage on the path, he collects it behind the house and stuff like that.” Eventually, smells appear and it stinks. If the bugs get in there, it’s the rest of us,” argues the man who bought a house in the Gulf sector 35 years ago.

“It’s a bitch. A landfill is better organized. On one side you have the hoops and on the other the iron. Everything is mixed up there. It’s ridiculous,” adds the 64-year-old.

The man who is responsible for this “Soue” has been renting the house for two years.

In the yard piles of pieces of wood, electrical appliances, tires, mattresses and other waste accumulate.

According to the neighborhood, the resident of the property was struggling with mental health issues, which would explain this disorder.

‘Here behind is the Carleton golf course. Don’t make me believe it’s beautiful. Tourists come and see the garbage. “It doesn’t look good there,” emphasizes Mr. Boudreau.

“For the neighbors it is certainly disgusting. But what should we do? (…) He doesn’t bother us, but he makes a mess in there. He breaks the rent from the landlord’s wife. She is ill, she cannot move the lady, she is an elderly lady,” says a neighbor.

Complaints have been lodged with the city, but nothing has been done, leading some to question whether the city government tolerates this type of dumping.

“Eventually they have to do something because things start to pile up (…) If the rest of them had that around their house, it would have been taken care of long ago and it wouldn’t be there anymore.” and the rest of us had to take two years put up with it for a long time,” says Mr. Boudreau.

However, the owner of the home, who would not allow us an interview, confirmed that a formal notice had been sent to the tenant, asking him to vacate the premises as soon as possible. The neighbors hope that this letter will settle the situation once and for all.
