To think that Bolsonaro has any merit in the escape

To think that Bolsonaro has any merit in the escape of Brazilians from Gaza is an illusion, says the former chancellor

To believe that former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has any merit in promoting negotiations to deport Brazilians from Gaza is nothing more than a delusion. The assessment comes from Aloysio Nunes, the former foreign minister, in contact with CartaCapital this Friday the 10th

After the announcement that Brazilians would be allowed to cross the border into Egypt, allies of the former captain tried to attribute the resolution to the meeting between Bolsonaro and the Israeli ambassador Daniel Zonshinein Brasília, last Wednesday, August 8th.

On this occasion, at the invitation of the Israeli representation, opposition MPs watched a video about the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th. The Israeli embassy subsequently denied inviting Bolsonaro to the meeting at the National Congress.

Nevertheless, farright parliamentarians began posting messages on social media about Bolsonaro’s alleged participation in diplomatic negotiations. The former president also told CNN Brasil that he spoke with Yossi Shelley, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and asked for support for the Brazilians’ release.

“If you believe that the Earth is flat, you can believe anything,” joked Aloysio Nunes in an interview with the reporter. “Obviously it is a deception, the result of fanaticism. And fraud on the part of Bolsonaro that must feed this kind of madness.”

The former chancellor also criticized Zonshine’s behavior and classified the ambassador as “unprepared and unsuitable for the post”.

“He deserves to be declared persona non grata for interfering in Brazilian domestic affairs. It doesn’t make any sense,” he continued. “He is an unqualified person to hold this position in a key country.”

When asked about the current phase of the conflict in the Middle East, Nunes appeared pessimistic.

“There is no political solution from Hamas because it wants the destruction of the State of Israel and will not achieve it. From the Israeli perspective, it also has no political perspective,” he assessed. “The only way to achieve peace would be to adopt the resolution on the two states, but that is not possible with the current Israeli government, which consists of a populist and a few pyromaniacs.”

The Hamas Ministry of Health announced this on Friday 11,078 people have died in Israeli bombing raids on the enclave since the war began on October 7th.

According to the ministry, the dead included 4,506 children and 3,027 women. The attacks also left 27,490 people injured.

Also this Friday, Israel reduced the death toll from 1,400 to 1,200 when Hamas attacked its territory.
