During their game on Thursday night, the Montreal Canadiens paid a beautiful tribute to Karl Tremblay, the Cowboys Fringants singer who passed away the day before.
Before the game against the Las Vegas Golden Knights began, we first saw a photo of the charismatic singer on the big screen, then we heard Shooting Stars, the group’s big hit.
Throughout the song, the lyrics flashed across the screen as audience members sang along and lit up the pitch-black Bell Center with their cell phone lights.
Meanwhile, Rafaël Harvey-Pinard hung a team jersey in the middle of the ice. On the back was the singer’s last name and the number 76, a reference to the year he was born; he had just turned 47.
At the end we saw a picture of the team’s locker room on the big screen, where the jersey was hung in honor of Tremblay.
A sober and intimate ceremony, like the singer. This was unfortunately marred a bit by fans booing the Golden Knights, who jumped onto the ice before the lights even came back on.
