After Top Gun: Maverick became the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise's career, a third Top Gun film is in the works.
Puck reports that Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger is “officially working on a script for the project,” which will reunite Cruise with his Maverick costars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. No director has been set yet, but Puck believes Maverick's Joseph Kosinski is attached and will likely serve as a producer on the project.

Starring Cruise as Marine pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, now a mentor to a new generation of fighter pilots including Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Teller) and Jake “Hangman” Seresin (Powell), “Top Gun: Maverick” was a belated sequel to “1986.” “. Top Gun and grossed more than $1.49 billion worldwide, making it Cruise's highest-grossing film. Mission: Impossible – Fallout was released in 2018 and was previously the actor's most successful with $791.1 million.
The news comes amid high-profile studio maneuvers over Cruise's career. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. announced that it had signed a non-exclusive deal with Cruise to “co-develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films.” However, Top Gun remains the property of rival studio Paramount, which will oversee Top Gun 3, likely Cruise's next film. Paramount also controls the Mission: Impossible series, the eighth installment of which was delayed by the Covid pandemic. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is scheduled to be released in May 2025.
