Longtime skateboarding legend Tony Hawk broke his femur this week and is in the hospital, he revealed on Instagram Tuesday afternoon.
While it’s unclear exactly how the injury occurred, TMZ Sports reported that the 53-year-old was skating when it happened.
Judging by the photo posted by Hawke, the fracture is quite serious.
“Yesterday sucked,” Hawk wrote in part. “I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full recovery. This broken femur repair will be much more difficult due to the severity (and my age). But I’m ready to take on the challenge.”
Hawke is undoubtedly the most famous skateboarder in history.
He has 10 X Games golds and 16 golds since his first win in 1995. Hawk is also the first person to ever complete the documented 900 medals, which he first did at X Games 5 in 1999, and is the creator of the hit video. series of games “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater”.
Hawke also has a new HBO documentary about his career in the near future called Until the Wheels Fall Off. Ironically, he says the trailer for this documentary is set to be released on Wednesday.
Hawk returned to the X Games in 2021, his first appearance there since 2003.
While he most likely won’t be competing again anytime soon, Hawke is determined to get back on the board again.
“I have said many times that I will not stop skating until I am physically incapacitated,” he wrote. “A broken leg – with a lot of equipment – will probably be the biggest test of this credo. I’ll be back, maybe not in full force, but I put up with it years ago as I approached “middle age.” … See you on the other side.”
