Breakout: Tony Hawk walked the red carpet of his HBO documentary single-handedly at the 2022 SXSW conference and festival just days after breaking his hip.
Earlier this week, he broke the news that he had broken his leg and posted a series of photos of his recovery, including x-rays of his leg injury.
On Monday, the athlete also recalled breaking his elbow 20 years ago: “This repair of a broken femur will be much more difficult due to its severity (and my age).
“It’s kind of ironic that this happened on the eve of HBO releasing the trailer for Sam Jones’ ‘Before the Wheels Fall Off’ documentary about my life and career, which focuses on the philosophy of how I/we do it at our age.” , he wrote on Instagram.
Smiling through the pain: The 53-year-old professional skateboarder wore a black jacket, jeans and Vans sneakers to the Austin premiere of “Till the Wheels Fall Off” on Friday night.
On his own: He showed no signs of pain from the breakup when he interacted with executive producers Mel Eslyn and Mark Duplass, as well as director Sam Jones.
“The answer is complex, but ultimately it is because I found my purpose and shaped my personality through skating, and that is very nourishing for my mental health.
“I have said many times that I will not stop skating until I am physically incapacitated. A broken leg – with a lot of equipment – will probably be the biggest test of this creed,” he added.
Orthopedic surgeon David Abbasi told TMZ the figure skating legend may have also fractured his hip, as evidenced by an X-ray released by Hawke showing three screws in the area.

Abbasi called Hawke’s injury “very serious”, noting that surgeons were able to stabilize his femur – one of the hardest bones in the body – with an intramedullary nail in the middle of the bone.

Ouch! Hawke, 53, announced that he had broken his leg on Monday, posting a series of photos to Instagram on Tuesday, including one in front of a hospital bed.
A California athlete shared an x-ray of a fractured femur that appeared to have been stabilized with an intramedullary nail.
Hawk posted a video of him walking on crutches in a hospital corridor. “I will be back…maybe not at full strength, but I came to terms with it many years ago as I approached ‘midlife’,” he wrote.
“Some of the photos look like he’s already piled on them,” Abbasi said of the dumping of Hawke’s photos in the hospital.
“I hope he doesn’t overdo it too soon, but I would like to see follow-up X-rays of the actual area of the fracture.
“That will be what will determine how quickly he can recover from this.”
Hawk says he plans to continue skating after his recovery.
“I will be back…maybe not at full strength, but I came to terms with it a few years ago as I approached ‘midlife’,” he wrote on Tuesday.
“Thank you to my ever-supportive, tolerant family – and all of you – for the love and support over the years; I wouldn’t be here without you. See you on the other side.’

He is now married to his fourth wife, Katherine Goodman, to whom he said yes in 2015.
“We are connected on a deep level in terms of our approach to life. I hate to use the word “alternative” but we have a unique approach to raising children, said Tony Katherine.
Katherine has two children from a previous marriage, and Tony has four of his own.
Tony was married to Cindy Dunbar from 1990 to 1993.
