Tom cruise came back to talk about it Top Gun: Maverickwhich highlights a moment when he got particularly emotional on set.

We’re talking about, as was easy to guess reunion sequence With the’ice cream man interpreted by Val Kilmer. Speak as a guest of Jimmy Kimmel Live Last Friday, Cruise spoke about the success of Top Gun: Maverick and the 6 nominations with which part to oscars next March 12th.

As the clip played, with Kilmer visually touching the audience in attendance, Cruise felt compelled to speak up and appeared emotionally involved himself.

I just want to say that it was quite emotional I’ve known Val for decades, he’s such a strong actor that when he came back to play that character, he immediately became that character again. You face Iceman“.

Kimmel then asked: “Did you cry when you shot it or was it just me?“. After a quick laugh, Cruise replied seriously, “I cried. I was touched. He’s such a brilliant actor and I love his work“. Kimmel then said that the film not only glorifies the stunts but also has a lot of heartwith Cruise repeating him: “There are touching moments“.

Val Kilmer started out as a stage actor and rose to fame in a couple of comedy films like Top Secret! (1984), School of Geniuses (1985) and taking part in action films in leading roles such as Top Gun and Willow.

He gained critical acclaim in the 1990s for several appearances in films that were also commercially successful: he played Jim Morrison in The Doors, Doc Holliday in Tombstone, Batman in Batman Forever, Chris Shiherlis in Heat – The Challenge and Simon Templar in the 1997 version of Il Santo. In early 2000 he appeared in critically acclaimed roles in Salton Sea – Nightmares and lies and Spartan; also appears in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Alexander and as the voice of KITT in Knight Rider.

In January 2015, Kilmer was hospitalized for testing for possible cancer. Kilmer wrote on his social media around the same time, “I haven’t had a tumor or surgery for a tumor or surgery at all.” After repeatedly denying cancer rumors, Kilmer said in April 2017 that he was “recovering from cancer.” It was later revealed that Kilmer was recovering from a two-year battle with throat cancer. During this time, the actor underwent a tracheotomy, which inevitably damaged his voice.

Jerry Brueckheimerwho produced both Top Gun films, previously told The Hollywood Reporter that Cruise was interested in including Kilmer, who is now cured of cancer, lucky for him. “Tom said, “I’m not doing this film without Val – said Bruckheimer at the time – When we were shooting it was a very emotional day to have Val there and to see him work with Tom after 35 years“.
