Paramount’s newly-crowned Academy Award nominee for Best Picture, Top Gun: Maverick, won Best Picture at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Saturday.
The sequel, starring Tom Cruise, beat out competition for the marquee award from the group, which also included other Oscar nominees in Warner Bros’ Elvis, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, Universal/Amblin’s The Fabelmans, Focus Features’ Tár and Orion/ UAR’s Women Talking belonged as Sony’s The Woman King.
Elvis’ Baz Luhrmann won Best Director and the film won Best Time Capsule, earning it the most wins on All Movie Night.
Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Brendan Fraser (The Whale) won Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively.
In the TV categories, FX’s The Old Man won Best TV Series, while the drama’s star, Jeff Bridges, won Best TV Actor. Emmy-winner Sheryl Lee Ralph won ABC’s Best TV Actress for Abbott Elementary.
The AARP, which aims to spotlight films and shows that directly appeal to audiences over 50 with its awards, also presented its Career Achievement Award to Jamie Lee Curtis tonight.
The ceremony, which will be hosted tonight by Alan Cumming, will air February 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS’ Great Performances, the PBS website and app.
