ITALY – After the heat wave, the storm. In northern Italy, and particularly in Lombardy, extreme heat has given way to other extreme phenomena. As you can see in the video at the top of the articleWhile the region was being hit by violent hailstorms this morning on Friday, July 21, a tornado was released in the north-east of the city of Milan.
The storms also caused ice flows, particularly in the streets of Seregno, about ten kilometers from Milan. According to the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, the tornado and bad weather caused significant damage, prompting firefighters to call out almost 190 times. There are no injuries to report.
According to the Italian press, the Lombardy region will ask the government to declare a state of natural disaster. “Unfortunately, these extreme events are increasing and for those who make a living from agriculture, a few minutes of hail means great inconvenience and, in the worst case, the loss of crops that represent a whole season’s work,” said Alessandro Beduschi, the Regional Councilor for Agriculture, as reported by Il Messaggero.
Southern Europe suffocated
Large parts of Europe are confronted with extreme heat waves at the end of July. This is particularly the case in Greece, where the heatwave is “likely” the longest ever recorded in its history, according to an official at the National Meteorological Observatory.
“According to our data, we are likely to experience a 16-17-day heatwave, which has never happened in our country before,” Kostas Lagouvardos, the observatory’s research director, told ERT-TV.
