Devastating tornadoes killed at least 25 people in Mississippi, United States, last weekend. The owners of a restaurant and their employees survived by hiding in the establishment’s huge refrigerator.
When the tornado hit the town of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, USA, residents had only minutes to seek shelter. For restaurant workers, salvation came from a giant refrigerator. “This fridge saved nine lives. If God hadn’t warned us about a tornado, we would all have died in the restaurant that was right here,” says one survivor.
“We cried, cried and also prayed”
It only takes a few seconds for customers to realize what is in store for them. The owner then has a reflex: push everyone into the cold room. “We were in the fridge. It was like we were being thrown around everywhere. Everyone was lying on top of each other. We were trying to hold on to the shelves on the walls. (…) We were screaming, crying and praying too. Suddenly everything stopped.” , says Tracy Harden, owner of Chuck’s Dairy Bar. The nine people in the cold room survived. Other residents were not so lucky. 13 people died in Rolling Fork alone.
