By Tommer, Venice wants to oblige tourists to book in advance their visit to the old city. As of 2023, a tour should only be possible with a purchased ticket.

Starting in 2023, visitors must buy a ticket to see parts of Venice that are on the water, such as Venice’s historic center, said Venice Tourism Commissioner Simone Venturini.

Venice: Tourists must book visits

The city wants to announce in the coming weeks when free online booking will be required. The municipality wants to be able to better plan in advance how many people will be in the city.

“Venice tourism starts again”

According to media reports, hundreds of thousands of visitors were in Venice around Easter. Long lines formed at popular attractions like St. Mark’s Basilica. “Venice tourism is starting again,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro wrote on Twitter on Easter Monday. “Today, many have understood that booking for the city is the right path for balanced tourism management,” he continued.

From 2023 a ticket is required to visit Venice

The 2023 ticket is especially important for anyone visiting the Unesco World Heritage Site. According to Venturini, anyone booking a hotel in Venice does not need to worry about this. Residents don’t need the ticket anyway. Many of them have been bothered by mass tourism on the “Serenissima” for years. During the corona pandemic, the number of visitors dropped significantly, but the demand was to better control the flow of tourists in the future.
