Towel hook or socket: Spy cameras are always easy to find on Amazon

Spy cameras disguised as everyday objects that easily fade into the background are still being offered for sale on Amazon's platform despite ongoing lawsuits against the e-commerce giant.

Towel hook, socket, USB charger, alarm clock: It would still be easy to get hold of items that have spy cameras built into them to film people without their knowledge, the BBC reported on Monday.

In several advertisements that are still online, the dealers do not even hide the possible uses, while the British media would have noticed the presence of images showing these items in the bathroom or in front of a bed, where we can see two adults entwined in each other .

However, the e-commerce giant is currently facing a lawsuit in the US from a woman who claims she was filmed in a bathroom without her knowledge by a spy camera hidden in a towel hook sold on the platform.

The man suspected of the crime would be prosecuted for his actions.

But on Amazon, other items, like a fire alarm designed to help “monitor an unfaithful partner” or a power outlet next to two electric toothbrushes in a bathroom, are still available at affordable prices.

If multiple products were justified under the guise of safety or child monitoring, their use could violate many laws, Jaya Handa, data protection partner at law firm Pinsent Masons, told the BBC.

“Given the expectation of privacy in the home, individuals could commit a crime under a range of other legal frameworks, including harassment, child protection, voyeurism, sexual offenses or human rights law,” she said.

Amazon was contacted by the BBC and declined to comment.
