Toxic substance leaked from freight train in Brenner

Toxic toluene, used in the manufacture of plastics, was spilled into the ballast bed under the tracks. How the leak happened is still unclear.

A toxic substance escaped from a freight train at the Brenner border station between Tyrol and South Tyrol on Tuesday morning. Train traffic was blocked for about two hours and released again around 6:30 am, the South Tyrolean online portal “stol.it” reported. The leak in the tank car was discovered during a routine inspection.

Toxic toluene, used in the manufacture of plastics, was spilled into the ballast bed under the tracks. The SS12 state road was also closed for work, which involved around 50 firefighters equipped with chemical protective suits and respiratory protection. The leak was eventually sealed and the binder applied. How the leak happened is still unclear. (APA)
