The derailment of a train loaded with toxic materials has worried residents in rural Ohio, United States. About 50 train cars derailed in the city of East Palestine on February 3 20 of those train cars were loaded with dangerous substances.

In addition to the consequences of the accident, there are also concerns about the environmental impact of the leaked toxic materials. Vinyl chloride spillage is of paramount importance. The substance is highly flammable and carcinogenic. Some of the vinyl chloride caught fire, releasing a huge plume of black, noxious smoke into the air.

The accident forced thousands of people to be evacuated from homes near the site, some 2,000 residents had to evacuate their homes to avoid becoming intoxicated by the toxic products released into the air.

In order to avoid an explosion, the emergency services carried out the release and controlled combustion of the substance in the intact cars 3 days after the accident. Harmful black clouds again spread across the sky at the site of the derailment.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitored the work and said at a press conference that the impact on the environment was minimal, but that air and water in the region would continue to be monitored.

“So far so good. And we will continue monitoring until the fire is extinguished,” EPA’s James Justice said.
After the events, the local government released the families to return to their homes, but many are afraid of getting drunk. Ten days after the accident, reports of dead animals surface as the ecological disaster unfolds about what happened.

Justice went on to say that a network of air station monitors took samples inside and outside the evacuation zone and none of the readings revealed anything of concern. “We want to make sure that doesn’t change,” he says.
