Tracy Chapman wins CMA Award for Luke Combs’ 1988 cover of “Fast Car”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tracy Chapman continues to make history with her 1988 hit “Fast Car” after winning Song of the Year at Wednesday’s Country Music Awards.

Chapman was not present during the broadcast, which took place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, but country star and category host Sarah Evans read a message on Chapman’s behalf after announcing her as the winner.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there tonight. It’s truly an honor for my song to be recognized again after 35 years of its debut. Wow. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thank you to Luke (Combs) and to “all the fans of ‘Fast Car,'” Evans said on behalf of Chapman.

The full list of CMA winners can be found here.

The CMA win is a notable achievement considering “Fast Car” debuted 35 years ago and regained popularity in July after country star Luke Combs released a cover of the hit single.

Combs’ cover reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart, making Chapman the first black woman to top the chart since its inception in 1990.

Chapman, the sole writer of “Fast Car,” also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country Songwriters chart thanks to Combs’ cover.

“I never expected to be on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,” Chapman said in a statement to Billboard at the time, adding, “I’m happy and grateful for Luke and his success “That new fans have come in.” I found “Fast Car” and accepted it.”

Combs also took home a CMA Award for Single of the Year on Wednesday for his cover of “Fast Car.”

“Fast Car” was the first single from Chapman’s self-titled debut album and earned her a 1989 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance as well as nominations for Record and Song of the Year.

She also won Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Folk Album this year.

The CMAs aired Wednesday on ABC and were hosted by country singer Luke Bryan and former football player Peyton Manning.
