The intensification of air turbulence could be linked to climate change. Scientists agree that they will become increasingly common.
The scene is shot a few minutes after turbulence of rare intensity hit the United States skies. On an airplane, the passengers are stunned to notice the damage. Some describe a fall of several hundred meters in the air. “I thought I was going to die. We were speechless, there was rubbish everywhere, the food was stolen,” says one man.
Aircraft designed to withstand turbulence
On other flights, the consequences are much more serious. In another video, the faces of passengers on a plane bound for Hawaii (USA) are smeared with blood. According to Xavier Tytelman, a flight safety specialist, the tremors are more spectacular than dangerous. “Planes are designed to withstand 150 percent of the worst turbulence in the Earth’s atmosphere,” he said. For the comfort of travelers, routes avoid high-risk areas, and speed cameras help avoid clouds. According to some scientists, the phenomenon could multiply with climate change.
