Twelve people died in an armed attack during a party in the town of Salvatierra in the Mexican state of Guanajuato in the early hours of Sunday, local authorities said.

“So far, 12 people have been reported dead,” the state ministry of Guanajuato, one of the most violent states in Mexico due to the activities of criminal groups, posted on X. A dozen injured people were taken to hospitals.

According to the local press, the massacre occurred at a location rented for the party in the municipality of Salvatierra. The Terra Negra Foundation, which supports local social projects, reported that the victims were young people taking part in “posadas,” celebrations before Christmas.

“I condemn the deplorable violence that took place this morning in the municipality of San José del Carmen. We are at your full disposal and in coordination with the deputy,” posted the mayor of Salvatierra, Germán Cervantes, on Facebook.

Similar attacks have been recorded in recent years in Guanajuto, which tops the list of states with the most murders in Mexico this year with 3,029, according to official figures.

The district, home to a prosperous industrial center, became the scene of clashes between groups from Santa Rosa de Lima and the Jalisco Nova Geração cartel, which were involved in drug trafficking and fuel theft, among other activities.
