Several days after 10-year-old Thai Ly Hao Nam fell down a 35-meter-deep concrete pipe in Vietnam, authorities pronounced him dead. The boy died 100 hours after unsuccessful rescue attempts, Doan Tan Buu, deputy prime minister of South Vietnam’s Dong Thap province, told reporters on Wednesday night (local time). They now want to retrieve his body as quickly as possible, he added.

Soldiers helped in the rescue work

So a team of doctors, coroners and local authorities came to the conclusion that the boy had died due to several factors. In addition to the location of the accident, the depth of the pipe, the duration of the rescue work and possible injuries that he would have suffered. The tests were still going on Wednesday morning. A camera previously lowered into the barrel did not show any signs of the child’s life.

Little Nam fell into a pipe at a new bridge construction site on Saturday. It is only about 25 centimeters in diameter. Authorities said no one thought a 10-year-old could get stuck that deep in the tube. The military also participated in the rescue work. With special equipment, rescuers continued to try to loosen the earth around the pipe so it could be pulled out with a crane.
