Transaction: Oilers make room on their payroll

With multiple contracts to offer this offseason, the Edmonton Oilers freed up some space on their payroll by sending forwards Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

The Alberta team will receive consideration in return for the two 24-year-old players going forward.

Yamamoto is a former Oilers first-round pick, 22nd overall in 2017. He made his National Hockey League debut in 2017-18 and since then has 118 points in 244 games. The right winger picked up 25 points in 58 games last season.

Kostin provided a nice surprise for Edmonton in 2022/23, his final year of contract before reaching the limited free hand. The former St. Louis Blues first-round pick got a job with the Oilers after starting the season in the American Hockey League. He finished the season with 21 points in 57 games.

This summer, general manager Ken Holland has to deal with defenseman Evan Bouchard, who ended the season brilliantly. He and forward Ryan McLeod become restricted free agents.
