Kayla Nicole opens up about why she unfollowed Brittany and Patrick Mahomes on Instagram and how surprised she was at the headlines it caused.
Nicole, 31, the ex-girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, has been thrust into the spotlight due to Kelce’s high-profile romance with Taylor Swift.
And in an interview with People, Nicole said she felt it was “important to address this publicly because I have unfollowed people publicly.”
“The reality is that I know these people in real life. And so I shared with these people in real life why I had to publicly make the decisions that I made,” she told the outlet.
Nicole said she has an “ongoing relationship” with Brittany and Patrick Mahomes, although her romance with Kelce ended a year ago after five years on and off.
Nicole and Brittany “have had our conversations,” and the content creator said her friend “knows I love her.”
“It’s a lot of history and friendship, it doesn’t change overnight,” she said. “But publicly, because things happen so quickly and so publicly, I have to protect myself. That’s really all. The love is still there.”

Social media users noticed in early October that Nicole unfollowed the Chiefs quarterback and his wife after Brittany began befriending Swift, which now included a handshake celebration.
Nicole also unfollowed Patrick’s younger brother Jackson Mahomes.
The former on-air sportswriter hopes to move forward with her life, but said she still feels love for the Kansas City community.

“But I have to move forward in my life and everyone has to respect that,” she said. “And if they respect that, hopefully that means they will no longer drag me into things that don’t concern me.”
Kelce’s relationship with the pop icon has dominated headlines since it was first reported in September that the two were “hanging out.”

Swift has appeared in four of Kelce’s last five games, with the Chiefs boasting an undefeated record when she was in the building.
The Chiefs travel to Denver to take on the Broncos on Sunday, but it’s unclear whether the “Anti-Hero” singer will be in attendance.
