Part of ABC’s legendary 1990’s TGIF comedy series, Boy Meets World was fondly remembered by a generation of children who grew up alongside their favorite characters. A highlight for many viewers was the development of fan-favorite couple Angela and Shawn, played by Trina McGee and Rider Strong. As the two repeatedly broke up and got together, viewers were heartbroken when they didn’t end up together and Angela left for Europe an episode before the series finale.

Well, the mystery of Angela’s absence has now been given a clear answer. During the throwback podcast, Pod Meets World, McGee revealed (via Deadline) to her former castmates Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle that she was kept away from the final episode because of the drama on set.

“I was told in a weird way by a very important person that you all went to [showrunner] Michael Jacobs, and you said, ‘We don’t want her in the last episode. She kind of takes our light.’ That was the gist of it,” McGee said.

“I was told after I filmed what the show was before the last episode called ‘Angela’s Ashes’ when I left. When Michael announced we were doing another show about Angela, I was so glad I didn’t realize this would be the show before the last show,” McGee added.

In the past, McGee has spoken out about the racism she faced on the set of Boy Meets World, including being called “Aunt Jemima” by co-star Friedle while sitting through hair and makeup. “I feel like I’ve always been the one that had to shut it down and move on,” McGee said in a 2020 interview with Yahoo! Chat about her experience with the ABC series. In the interview, McGee said she eventually apologized to both Friedle and Fishel for her behavior.

On the podcast, Friedle, who played Cory Matthews’ brother on the show, refuted that one of the leads asked McGee not to be in the finale.

“I believe you,” McGee replied. “I can tell from your reactions. I’ve had this in my head for so long, and I’ve never seen this show. I always felt, uh… that hurt me for a long time.”
