This Saturday, the depression in the western Caribbean Sea, near the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and the western end of Cuba, rapidly gained organization and intensity, becoming the tenth tropical depression of the current hurricane season.
In its Tropical Cyclone Warning #1, the Institute of Meteorology states that at 5 p.m. the central region of the tropical depression was at latitude 21.1 degrees north, longitude 86.1 degrees west, about 105 kilometers northeast of Cozumel , Mexico and 145 kilometers west-southwest of Cabo de San Antonio in the province of Pinar del Río.
The tropical depression has maximum continuous winds of 45 kilometers per hour, with stronger gusts, its central pressure is 1006 hectoPascals and they remain almost stationary. The showers and thunderstorms associated with this system span the northwestern Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan Channel, and western Cuba.
The influence of this system has resulted in sustained rainfall over Pinar del Río and Isla de la Juventud since dawn, which is expected to continue and increase over the next few hours over the rest of the western region. The INRH rain gauge network reported 101.0 millimeters at Carapachibey Lighthouse on the Isle of Youth in the last 24 hours. In addition, this morning in the town of Manuel Lazo, municipality of Sandino in the province of Pinar del Río, a total of 102.2 millimeters was measured in just 4 hours.
