Troy Kotzur is ‘happy’ to be an Oscar nominee and admits award-winning CODA has already changed his life

Troy Kotzur spoke about the Oscar nomination during an interview with People, which was published on Saturday.

During the sit-in, the 53-year-old actor, who starred in the 2021 comedy-drama film CODA, spoke about how being nominated for an award and made famous by a hit film has changed his life.

The performer was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film, where he portrayed a distressed fisherman trying to provide for his family.

Kotsur said he is grateful to his loved ones for their continued support throughout his career as a performer.

“It’s very important to me that my family is really there, because over the past 35 years I’ve been through a lot as an actor and almost lost my family due to financial reasons and other problems,” he said.

The actor then noted that before the release of the film, he had a difficult financial situation.

“I had no pension, no savings, no opportunity to support my daughter in college, so I was worried,” he recalled.

Kostur noted that the Oscar nomination broadened his professional prospects and almost ensured his future success.

“I am so happy that I was a nominee. It really saved my career and I can take it to the next level,” he said.

He noted that after the release of CODA, “I was able to say, ‘Finally hearing people can feel, see, and experience my silent experience.’ I’ve had a lifetime of silence.

Kostur emphasized that “the people who recognize my work are beautiful people.”

He also said that his fans have “big hearts”. And they know how to see talent. They can look at me not as a deaf person, but as an artist who turned out to be deaf.”

The actor noted that he was pleased to see a positive portrayal of deaf and hard of hearing performers in the film.

“I really appreciate this cultural shift and people who are ready to change their point of view,” he said.

CODA is an English-language remake of the 2014 French feature film La Famille Belier.

The film centers on the only hearing member of a deaf family who struggles to balance his concern for his family’s well-being with his own personal aspirations.

In addition to Kotsur, such performers as Marley Matlin, Eugenio Derbez and Daniel Duran starred in the movie.

CODA premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and has since been widely shown in theaters and on the Apple TV+ streaming service.
