Trudeau calls for unity as war between Israel and Hamas divides Canadians

The war between Israel and Hamas is contributing to a rise in “unacceptable” intercommunal hatred across Canada and it is the responsibility of all Canadians to “look after each other,” Justin Trudeau said in an emotional unity statement.

“Here in this country, people suffer every day,” said the Prime Minister before the group meeting in Parliament on Wednesday morning.

Referring to “attacks on synagogues, hateful and targeted demonstrations against Jewish businesses, community centers and Jewish daycare centers,” Mr. Trudeau denounced “a terrible rise in anti-Semitism.”

In recent days, a synagogue in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, west of Montreal, was attacked with a Molotov cocktail, while over the weekend radical imam Adil Charkaoui launched a tirade in the middle of a demonstration in Montreal that he was likened to “incitement to hatred ” by Prime Minister François Legault.

“This is unacceptable, this is not who we are. We must be there to understand and alleviate the fear and pain experienced by Jews in Canada and around the world,” the Prime Minister continued.

At the same time, he denounced Islamophobia and “the attacks, the intolerance, the accusations against anyone who dares to display a Palestinian flag.”

“I’m telling you, if we can’t get along better in Canada, we shouldn’t just get along, we should listen to each other. In which country in the world will these communities that are doing so badly be able to come closer to each other?”
