The first – and now trying to return – US President Donald Trump still has the Republican electorate with an overwhelming majority behind him: on Tuesday, “Super Tuesday”, he celebrated clear victories in several US states and it was like this that he has come significantly closer to his goal of being officially named the Republican candidate for next November's US presidential election. He managed to prevail against his internal party opponent, Nikki Haley, in almost every state where voting took place this time. Trump celebrated particularly important victories in the populous states of Texas, California and Virginia. With a narrow victory in the small east coast state of Vermont, Haley, a former US ambassador to the UN, was at least able to claim a respectable success. As expected, incumbent Joe Biden scored big wins among Democrats – counting was still ongoing on Wednesday morning (Central European Time).
