Donald Trump underlined on Saturday his rejection of a draft immigration deal that Joe Biden is trying to negotiate with Republicans in the US Congress and which, according to the Democratic president, would allow him to close the border with Mexico.
“A bad agreement at the border is much worse than no agreement at all!” wrote the Republican favorite for the 2024 presidential election in all caps on his Truth Social network.
Joe Biden is hoping to convince Republican elected officials to validate his bill to control illegal immigration at the Mexican border, an issue that is emerging as one of the key themes of the presidential campaign.
Campaigning in Las Vegas, Nevada (West), Mr. Trump asserted on Saturday that “there is a 100 percent chance that there will be a large-scale terrorist attack in the United States” carried out by people crossing the border crossed to Mexico.
The former president disparaged Mr. Biden's plan and, to cheers from the audience, vowed again to “launch the largest deportation operation in America.”
When Joe Biden traveled to South Carolina (Southeast) on Saturday, he defended the text and assured that it would “give him as president emergency authority to close the border” until the situation is under control.
“If this text were in force today, I would close the border immediately and solve the problem quickly,” he emphasized.
The outgoing president, who is seeking a second term, praised on Friday “the toughest and fairest reforms we have ever made in our country to secure the border.”
Joe Biden has agreed to toughen his tone on immigration in the hope that Republicans, who have linked the two issues, will green light a new program of major military aid to Ukraine.
But Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson warned that any vote on new funding for Ukraine is currently “dead.”
Donald Trump has made immigration a key focus of his campaign to retake the White House in 2025 and is using his influence with Republicans to block any deal on Ukraine.
