Donald Trump is shaking. Of all the open investigations against him, it’s that of paid porn star Stormy Daniels that could cost him the indictment. Manhattan DAs have signaled to the tycoon’s attorneys that their client could be prosecuted for the illicit funds to the woman if he remains silent about their relationship. And they’ve offered him a chance to testify before a grand jury next week to explain his side of the story.

It’s likely, reports The New York Times, that Trump will refuse an opportunity to appear before the jury, and it’s possible his lawyers will attempt to meet with authorities in hopes of avoiding indictment.

The tycoon’s anger at the possible impeachment is not long in coming: Democrats “can’t take the seats and therefore resort to the law as a weapon,” thundered the former president in truth, going so far as to deny ever having a relationship with Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. Should New York City prosecutors decide to proceed, it would be the first indictment against a former American president, with far-reaching ramifications for the political system and beyond.

election campaign endangered

For Trump, that would be a major setback for his 2024 campaign, in which he remains – at least for the time being – the Republican favorite. Trump has declared himself independent of the payment for years, describing the legal action against him over the matter as a “witch hunt”.

To defend himself against the allegations, Trump and his lawyers could stress the lack of credibility of Michael Cohen, the tycoon’s former fixer-turned-his-lead accuser. Cohen reportedly paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about his relationship with Trump and was then repaid by Trump while he was in the White House. Cohen confessed to New York authorities that the former president knew everything and repaid him monthly with fake legal fees.

If Trump is finally convicted, he faces up to four years in prison. However, imprisonment is not mandatory in such cases, considering that the crime he is accused of is of minor magnitude. An indictment would bring Manhattan attorney Alvin Bragg onto the national stage with a complex and risky case whose outcome is far from certain. A chance for Bragg to establish himself and to look ahead professionally.
