(Portal) A federal judge on Wednesday denied Donald Trump’s request for a new trial after a jury found the former US president to be responsible for the sexual abuse and later defamation of author E. Jean Carroll, and awarded Carroll damages of $5 million to.

In a 59page decision, Manhattan Judge Lewis Kaplan also dismissed Trump’s arguments to reduce the damages to under $1 million.

Kaplan said the May 9 unanimous decision was “almost entirely in favor of Ms. Carroll” and was not a “grossly erroneous finding” or “a miscarriage of justice.”

Trump, who is again seeking the presidency, appealed the verdict, supplementing his previous appeal against the jury’s verdict. His attorney did not respond to requests for comment.

Carroll, 79, accused 77yearold Trump of raping and defaming her in the dressing room of a Manhattan department store in the mid1990s in an October 2022 social media post, when he described the incident as “farce and Lie” and explained that Carroll wasn’t his “type”.

She is also suing Trump for defamation and seeking $10 million over similar statements he made in June 2019 after she accused him of forcing her to have sex at the Bergdorf Goodman store. A hearing is scheduled for January 15, 2024.
