Tunisian hauliers strike for better wages

The strikers expect the executive to meet its financial obligations, said Vadjij Zidi, general secretary of the transport association, who is a member of the Tunisian General Union of Labor (UGTT), the country’s most influential union.

The UGTT is preparing to stage a general strike over the next 25 and 26 days to protest what they describe as exclusion by the State Enterprises Cabinet, radio station Mosaïque FM said.

The government ignored workers’ social demands and gave the go-ahead for the privatization of state-owned enterprises, hence the need for the strike, considered the leadership of the UGTT, founded in 1946 with more than 750,000 members.
