Turkey has closed its airspace to Russian military and civilian planes flying to Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters during his trip to Latin America. The matter was reported by the Russian state agency TASS.

“We issued permits at threemonth intervals. The last was until April,” he told Sabah newspaper. The senior Turkish diplomat claimed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan briefed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the situation.

“From now on, flights have been grounded,” he added, saying the process will be conducted through dialogue on both the Montreux Convention and other matters.

Russia is providing military support to Bashar alAssad’s regime in Syria, and routes via Turkey are shortening flights for troop and equipment transport planes. With the Turkish decision, the Russians will have to take over routes that pass through other countries such as Azerbaijan, Iran and Iraq.
