A damaged building in Turkey after the earthquake Portal
Another powerful earthquake struck Turkey on Saturday morning, once again shaking the region which was struggling to recover from a catastrophic tremor two weeks ago.
The 5.2 magnitude quake struck central Turkey, just days after another quake near the Syrian border. It struck near the cities of Aksaray and Emirgazi.
Saturday’s quake came as Turkey and Syria tried to rebuild homes for the nearly two million people made homeless by the massive 7.8 magnitude tremor on February 6. Tents, container houses and other facilities are being used as temporary shelters, but many have yet to receive help.
“Our homes are badly damaged, so we took refuge here in a garden in our neighborhood,” said a 25-year-old nursing student named Alswed, who was among 60 Syrians living in a makeshift roadside settlement near the city of Antakya lived. Residents used plastic sheeting, blankets, bricks and chunks of concrete from damaged buildings to construct 11 temporary shelters.

“The biggest problem is tents. It’s been 19 days and we still haven’t received a single tent. We also applied to move to a tent camp, but they said the ones nearby were full,” he said.
Turkish officials said 335,000 tents have been set up in Turkey’s earthquake zone and container settlements have been set up at 130 sites. Almost 530,000 people were also evacuated from the earthquake area.
The death toll in the two countries from the earlier quake and its aftershocks rose to 50,000 overnight, but it is not yet known if anyone died in Saturday’s quake, the Chron reported.
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Turkey and Syria on Monday. Three people died and other buildings collapsed.
