The State Department says there are no causal links to the attack and “strongly condemns” the incident.

The Turkish consulate general in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul was attacked, but there were no reported casualties, according to Turkey’s foreign ministry.

“We condemn this attack … in the strongest possible terms and expect those responsible to be brought to justice as soon as possible,” the ministry said on Wednesday.

“We urge the Iraqi authorities to meet their responsibilities in protecting diplomatic and consular missions.”

The ministry said the attack coincided with a meeting of the United Nations Security Council held at the request of Iraqi authorities last week to discuss an attack in northern Iraq, “at a time when our country was being unfairly blamed and attacked.” “.

The source of Wednesday’s attack on the consulate was uncertain; A provincial MP told AFP four rockets fell – causing damage to cars parked on the street near the consulate, but another official and security sources told Portal mortar shells near the building and inside its perimeter had fallen.

Ankara denies allegations

Eight people were killed and 23 wounded in an attack on a mountain resort in northern Iraq’s Dohuk province on July 20.

Turkey has denied claims by Iraqi officials and state media that it carried out the attack.

Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes in northern Iraq and has dispatched commandos to support its offensives against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters stationed there.

The PKK launched a rebellion against the Turkish state in 1984 and more than 40,000 people were killed in the conflict. It is considered a “terrorist” group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

“We reiterate our call to the Iraqi authorities to focus on the fight against terrorism and to end the terrorist presence on their territory,” the ministry said.

The state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Turkish UN representative Oncu Keceli as saying several mortar shells fell near the consulate during the meeting.
