This Wednesday (5th) was marked by the second day of mass redundancies at Globo. According to the column by UOL’s Lucas Pasin, following layoffs in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday (4), several G1 professionals, reporters and presenters from channels in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Recife and Brasilia are now their turn to be fired. Names no longer working at the company include Giuliana Morrone, Fabio Turci and Eduardo Tchao.

According to the publication, people working at the São Paulo headquarters and directly related to the layoffs said the situation behind the scenes was such that big names in journalism were crying in the corridors, either because of their own layoffs or because of the departure of colleagues. The climate would have been even more violent due to lists of allegedly fired names circulating in WhatsApp groups.

“There are no smiles at TV Globo today. Everyone spends the day waiting for their turn. A lot of people are crying in the public areas, in the coffee shop, in small circles of colleagues,” a source said. The column said Globo said internally that the criteria for selecting employees to be made redundant, in addition to participation bonuses, were the professionals with the highest salaries, a health plan that differs from the new model.

The first resignation of the day in São Paulo was that of Márcia Correa, editorinchief of Bom Dia São Paulo, who was notified at 7am. The others learned that they would be fired from the company in the late afternoon. César Galvão, Fabio Turci and Zelda Mello, reporters working in São Paulo, were fired along with Fábio William and Giuliana Morrone. Employees are first called for an interview with the head of journalism and then directed to Globo’s Human Resources (HR) building.

In addition to Correa, the following professionals were fired in this second wave: Márcia Witczak, editor and presenter of DF1, Fábio Turci, Lúcia Carneiro of GloboNews, Sávio Ladeira, Marta Cavallini, Olivia Henriques and Dennis Barbosa of portal G1 . Ana Paula Mendes, presenter of InterTV, a Globo affiliate in Cabo Frio (RJ), was released after returning from maternity leave.

About 20 employees were laid off at the Rio de Janeiro branch on the first day. Reporters Eduardo Tchao, Mônica Sanches, Flavia Jannuzzi and Marcelo Canellas, as well as Fantástico Artistic Director Jorge Espírito Santo, Jorjão, and investigative reporter Arthur Guimarães left the company. Marcos Serra Lima, Alba Valéria Mendonça and Rodrigo Melo also left from G1.

The portal explained that the management of the offices in Recife and Belo Horizonte is now expected to be commanded from Rio de Janeiro, so they will no longer have local directors. Employees would fear that headquarters would be without autonomy. In addition, Globo has also suspended the selection process and will not fill the vacancies for G1 in São Paulo and for the Jornal Hoje edition.

In a statement, the company explained that the cuts are being made because of the changes that have taken place over the past few years. “Globo, like the other leading companies in the market, is constantly committed to the pursuit of efficiency and advancement, but regrets when it says goodbye to professionals who helped write and tell its story. But that is part of the dynamic of any company,” he began.

“Globo’s results reflect the good performance of its operations as a whole and a constant assessment of the country’s economic and business scenario. As part of the transformation process it has undergone over the past few years, in line with its strategy, the company maintains its cost discipline and invests in key growth initiatives,” he concluded.
