Twenty One Pilots Frontman Climbs Lollapalooza Structure During “Car Radio”

Selected at the last minute to replace Blink 182 who would be playing at the Lollapalooza this Saturday (25th), Twenty One Pilots played a similar show to the one they played in São Paulo last August.

But the presentation had two moments that changed the setlist: one from Blink 182 (“All the small things”, in an almost instrumental version) and a medley of homage to Brazil in which the trumpeter “Garota de Ipanema” played. , “Mas than nothing” and “Baile de Favela”.

Lolla 2023: Twenty One Pilots electrifies audience with “Morph”

It was the third time at Lollapalooza, but the first time that the two were not alone on stage. They start unaccompanied, but musicians come and go on stage.

In the first Lolla, released in 2016, the band put on a show full of props and poses with a sound heavily focused on rap rock. You were a good nomination for a Linkin Park orphan. They still are, but today they go well beyond that label.

R&B and disco music dominate the band’s sound, which stays in the back of the stage, letting Tyler Joseph (vocalsrapperbassistkeyboards) and Josh Dun (drummer) lead the way. Bassist, keyboardist, trumpeter and guitarist fill the duo’s sound with groove.

As always on the duo’s shows, vocalist Tyler Joseph climbed onto one of the racetrack’s structures and sang from there on “Car Radio.”

Twenty One Pilots Launches Lolla 2023 Show With Guns For Hands

If I were a lead singer for Twenty One Pilots climbing tall structures I would say this was the most frustrating thing I have ever seen. Easy climbing, low difficulty, low tension.

Subsequent hits (“Stressed Out” and “Heathens”) were more exciting and well received than the singer’s mischief.

“Things can always go wrong,” he explained. “Sometimes we get to a stage early and walk over to see where he’s going to climb and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to climb this thing.’ And I ask, ‘Are you going to climb? the thing?’ So yeah, that sure can make me nervous.”

The finale had fireworks, shredded paper rain, flames of fire and flashing lights. All at the same time, with a little exaggeration. What’s the sound of the band in a way.
