Sonny Gray left today’s start with a right hamstring strain after facing just seven hitters, according to MLB.com’s Ian Browne (via twitter). Gray is day-to-day, and they won’t put him on the injured list as of now, according to MLB.com’s Do-Hyoung Park (via twitter). They should have a better idea tomorrow if they need to skip him in the rotation. Josh Winder was relieved and he could be an option for a point start or two if Gray is unable to walk. With a six-man rotation, the Twins could also be content with simply skipping Gray’s place. He’s not scheduled for another start until next Friday against the White Sox. In other Twins news…
- right-handed Dereck Rodriguez has deleted waivers and was assigned Triple-A St. Paul by MLB.com, according to Do-Hyoung Park (via twitter). Rodriguez made one appearance and gave up three earned runs over four innings before being designated for assignment. He spent last season in Triple-A with the Rockies but didn’t make it to the show. He posted a 6.72 ERA over 85 2/3 innings for Albuquerque.
- Byron Buxton‘s MRI came back clean, and like Gray, the twins tend to keep him on the active roster while he heals, according to The Athletic’s Dan Hayes. Buxton had his knee drained of fluid due to inflammation, but with no structural damage, there is hope that Buxton can be back on the diamond in a few days. Buxton’s health is obviously a key variable for the twins this season and they should be cautious before sending him back onto the pitch.
