Minnesota secures second consecutive win behind 3rd in 4 heats, Ober’s strong start
June 14, 2023
MINNEAPOLIS — All season, pitching has given the Twins a tenuous lead in the American League Central. Now it seems the bats are finally catching up — and Minnesota has started the uptrend at the right time.
Wednesday afternoon was business as usual for right-hander Bailey Ober, who again got off to a weak start with six innings, and the offense again stringed together some timed hits in a four-run third inning to earn a 4-2 win over the Brewers in the Target Field.
It secured the Twins a two-game Borderline win and their second straight win as they emerged from their toughest stretch of the season. Now they have a chance to gain some ground as 10 of their 23 remaining games before the All-Star break will be played against the Tigers and Royals.
“Some of that can be a dynamic or a flow of energy within the team when a team is feeling good, there’s a good vibe and people are relaxed,” said Trevor Larnach. “Beatings can be contagious.”
Minnesota could have dropped out after falling below .500 with a 31-32 record Thursday after beating the MLB-best Rays. Instead, the Twins have responded with four wins in five games, including streak wins over two rival teams, the Blue Jays and Brewers – and soon they’ll have Byron Buxton back from injury too.
The entire hitting group held a meeting to discuss the approach and joint efforts as a unit during this series against the Rays, manager Rocco Baldelli said. Since then, the Twins have been happier with the quality of their shots, which led to Sunday’s strong performance against Blue Jays ace Kevin Gausman, late-inning comeback and pressure throughout Tuesday’s game and Wednesday’s big inning.
“We’ve had some games where we’ve been really good, like today, where it’s all about stopping shots out of the zone and just hitting the right shots is maybe one of the most important aspects of that game.” And that task of going out there and produce barrels,” said Baldelli.
“We see what we want to see. let it go That’s all we can do. Let it go.”
Carlos Correa’s turnaround at the plate coincided with the rise of the Twins’ offense, which has 26 runs in its last four games after being limited to 10 runs in its last seven games — with Correa’s grand slam in Toronto and walk-off homers on Tuesday plays a major role in this balance sheet.
Correa added to that collection with a game-winning two-run triple in the third inning, building his recent surge to a .333/.407/.875 line in his last six games (a 1,282 OPS) with three home runs, two doubles and one triple.
And as Correa prospered, so did the Twins, with the patience and aggressiveness of young batsmen and veterans they often lacked during this team-wide lull.
After Edouard Julien’s one-off double against Brewers starter Colin Rea, Donovan Solano left. And with two outs, Correa smashed the triple off the right field wall before Larnach added an RBI double and Joey Gallo hit an RBI single for the Twins’ second four-run inning in as many games.
“Much [the meeting] It was approach and struggle and getting good results together as a group, which you saw in an inning today and at some points in Toronto,” Larnach said. “Obviously that’s what everyone wants in this game, especially during the season.
“It’s been such a long year that everything is in flux. Drops, good stretches, everything.”
And if the Twins have played like they’ve played all season — with the second-best WAR as a team, according to FanGraphs, in baseball and by far the best starter WAR — those are good batting streaks by and large, equating win stretches.
The Twins are 27-8 this season if they hit four runs or more, which shouldn’t be too much of a challenge considering the talent on this offense while still in perfect health.
With Buxton on the mend and now a scary stretch of the game with the Guardians, Padres, Dodgers, Blue Jays, Astros and Rays behind them, here is an excellent opportunity to build that momentum further, with their stars leading the way.
“There is a different mood,” said Correa on Tuesday. “There’s a different aura and level of confidence. You can see that when the guys make an effort.”
