The rookie with a flair for the biggest moments further expanded his already extensive Twins legacy by hitting a home run in the first two postseason appearances of his career — leaving his teammates and coaches struggling to find the words to say to describe everything.

“I tried to expand my vocabulary and leave out all the great adjectives,” said manager Rocco Baldelli. “Sometimes I can’t believe what he does. They are so impressive.”

“Thank God he’s on our team,” Ryan Jeffers said. “He just keeps doing more and more things that you just can’t find the words to describe. We have a lot more games to win this October and I’m sure he will play a big role in that.”

If you’re feeling like there’s some magic to Lewis’ inspired run to 2023, here’s more info:

Lewis became the second Twins player to hit multiple home runs in a postseason game, joining Gary Gaetti in Game 1 of the 1987 ALCS. He is also the second rookie in club history to make it deep into the playoffs, joining Scott Leius, who hit a home run in Game 2 of the 1991 World Series. Lewis also joined Gaetti and Evan Longoria (2008) as the only players in AL/NL history to hit a home run in his first two postseason plate appearances.

Twins fans know the significance of these two years all too well: 1987 and 1991 – the only two years in the club’s history that Minnesota won the World Series.

“This is a God thing,” Lewis said. “I’m just blessed to be a part of it. I mean, I felt like I was powerless the whole game, but especially in the moments when I was on the field. My heart was racing. It was just human nature.”

Every time the electric rookie goes down, Lewis seemingly comes back stronger than ever – and this was no different. Even 24 hours before first pitch, Lewis and the Twins had expressed uncertainty about his availability for this series as he recovered from a left hamstring injury, but Lewis eventually made the roster in a purely DH role.

Lewis doesn’t have to run fast anyway if he just hits the ball over the fence.

He didn’t take the opportunity for granted. Before that homer, he stepped back from the batter’s box in his first plate appearance and just looked around at the sea of roaring fans, crimson homer handkerchiefs waving in the air.

“Just take it all in,” Lewis said. “You never know when you’re going to get into this situation. We had a hell of a season and I just wanted to take it all in. These fans came for us. I got this advice from Joe Mauer via text message today.”

At 24 years, 120 days, Lewis is the youngest player to hit a home run in the postseason for the Twins since the franchise moved to Minnesota in 1961. He became the tenth rookie with a multi-homer game in the playoffs and also the tenth to hit a deep multiple time in his first career postseason game, finishing his game 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk and a groundout .

And Lewis, of course, is no stranger to historical explosions.

Most notably, he set a record with four Grand Slams in a 20-game span that season, the most in the club’s history – which in retrospect could well have served as a foreshadowing of postseason heroics to come. Lewis lives for these big moments and posted a career OPS of 1.232 with runners in scoring position heading into these playoffs.

“This is what I think he was born to do,” Jorge Polanco said. “It is very special to see him in these moments. He doesn’t shy away from these moments. He loves it and we love seeing him in these moments.”

Lewis was so hot on the field in September – hitting .313/.410/.612 with six home runs and 23 RBIs – that he was named AL Rookie of the Month despite appearing in just 18 games in the final month of the season was used.

“Royce is the spark plug of this team,” Kyle Farmer said before Game 1. “AL Rookie of the Month for September with six home runs.” That shows how well our September went with him in the lineup. In a sense, he carried the offense with him.”

Lewis, a one-time No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, lost his 2020 minor league season to the COVID-19 pandemic and then lost most of his ’21 and ’22 seasons to back-to-back ACL tears. The Twins had no expectations of his ability to be an immediate MLB contributor – but Lewis made the wait worth it with a .309/.372/.548 regular season hit.

Twins fans have been waiting for their postseason hero since 2004. Could Lewis finally be the one?

“He’s a special player and he shows it,” Caleb Thielbar said. “He’s out there on one leg, hitting two home runs in a game. What else can you say about the guy?”
