Twitter blocks accounts of several journalists

Journalists reporting critically about owner Musk were apparently blocked on Twitter. Employees of CNN and The New York Times are among those affected.

US short messaging service Twitter blocked the accounts of several journalists reporting on the company and its new boss, Elon Musk. More than half a dozen journalists were affected on Thursday (local time). Some of them had reported the day before about the suspension of a user account in which all of Musk’s flights were documented.

Twitter did not give reasons for suspending the journalists’ accounts. Those affected work for well-known media outlets such as CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post. But freelance journalists have also been affected.

“The sudden and unwarranted suspension of journalists, including CCN’s Donie O’Sullivan, is concerning – but not surprising,” the network said. “Twitter’s increasing instability and volatility should raise serious concerns for anyone using the platform.” CNN demanded an explanation from Twitter and the reaction to the incident depended on it.

Multibillionaire Musk – currently the world’s second-richest person behind French luxury goods tycoon Bernard Arnault – has thrown Twitter into chaos since the takeover in late October. He fired top management and about half the workforce and unlocked suspended accounts like that of former US President Donald Trump. Critics worry that under Musk’s leadership, hate speech and misinformation could skyrocket on Twitter.
