Twitter relaxes advertising ban on political content

Twitter boss Elon Musk is changing guidelines for political advertising that have been in place since 2019. Critics warn the platform could become a stage for hate speech, misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Twitter is relaxing its political advertising policy. The US short message service will review its policy on “advertising about social issues” in the United States and “bring it in line with that of television and other media”, the company said by new owner Elon Musk.

Twitter banned political advertising in 2019 after the social media company and other services like Facebook came under fire for failing to comprehensively address election misinformation. The company then also restricted ads related to social causes.

Advertisers have been fleeing Twitter since Musk took office in late October. They expressed concern over Musk’s plans to relax content moderation rules in the name of free speech. Critics warn that the platform could become a hotbed for hate speech, misinformation and conspiracy theories.
