Two activists throw soup on the glass protected painting La Gioconda

Two activists throw soup on the glass-protected painting “La Gioconda”.

This Sunday, two activists poured cans of soup on “La Gioconda” (16th century), the masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci on display at the Louvre, whose original painting has been protected by glass since 2005.

The two women, part of a group called Riposte Alimentaire (Food Response), which advocates for sustainable food, threw the orange soup and walked under the barriers surrounding the painting while loudly shouting their demands.

“What is the most important thing? Art or the right to healthy and sustainable food? “Our agricultural system is sick,” shouted one of the activists.

The Riposte Alimentaire group expressed its commitment to this protest on its social network account “Sustainable Social Food Security”.

“La Gioconda,” considered the most famous painting in the world and also known as the Mona Lisa, was recently the subject of another protest when a cake was thrown at it in May 2022. The action this Sunday in Paris also follows other attacks by climate activists in recent months against famous paintings around the world, such as “The Sunflowers” by Van Gogh or “The Majesties” by Goya.
