Two employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were kidnapped in Mali on Saturday, March 4, the NGO’s Malian branch said Twitter.
“We confirm the kidnapping of two of our colleagues this morning between Gao and Kidal,” the ICRC said. “The ICRC has been present in Mali for 32 years and is a neutral, independent and impartial organization. “We ask that you do not speculate about this incident so as not to complicate its resolution,” he added.

Since 2012, Mali has been in the midst of a severe security crisis and violence, particularly the kidnapping of foreigners and Malians, is common. The motives for these kidnappings range from ransom demands to retaliation.
In February, a World Health Organization doctor who had been kidnapped in the country was released.
