Two goals in 25 seconds while outnumbered: a first for CH since 1940

Regis “Pep” Kelly. If you don’t mind the name, you’ll be forgiven in advance.

Who is this Pep Kelly? On December 26, 1940, he scored two shorthanded goals against the Canadian in just 16 seconds. That night the Chicago Blackhawks lost 7-5.

In the Canadian’s great history, this is the record for two goals scored by an outnumbered opposing team.

The visiting Minnesota Wild had Brandon Duhaime and Connor Dewar beat Samuel Montembeault within 25 seconds of each other on the same shootout in the first period.

We had to go back more than 82 years to retrace the two goals allowed by the Habs faster when the team was outnumbered.

4 tiny seconds

With the help of NHL statisticians, we determined the record for the fastest two short-handed goals.

The award goes to the Calgary Flames in 1989. Doug Gilmour and Paul Ranheim scored two shorthanded goals in just four seconds. The Flames earned an 8-8 tie against the Quebec Nordiques on October 17, 1989.

Table of records for the fastest two short-handed goals:

  • October 17, 1989: Calgary Flames (Doug Gilmour and Paul Ranheim) 4 seconds against the Quebec Nordiques
  • November 19, 1987: Calgary Flames (Hakan Loob and Perry Berezan) 7 seconds vs. Quebec Nordiques
  • December 31, 1995: Colorado Avalanche (Peter Forsberg and Claude Lemieux) 11 seconds against the Dallas Stars
