There are already suspects in the fatal knife attack on Yoel Quispe, a 22-year-old young man whose body was found in the center of A Coruña in the early hours of Christmas Eve. The police arrested two men this Thursday and, after the searches and interrogations they carried out throughout the day, do not rule out the possibility of further arrests in the coming hours. An emergency call at 6:30 a.m. last Sunday reported that a boy was lying dead at the intersection of Juan Flórez and Sinfónica de Galicia streets. Shortly afterwards the location was taken over by a team of police investigators who combed the area including the containers, but the weapon was not found. The stab wound that took his life was in the heart.
The Organized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) of the National Police Corps has taken over the investigation, the same team that solved the crime of Samuel Luiz, who died in the summer of 2021 after a brutal beating on the coast of A Coruña. The family of the victim, a boy of Peruvian origin, has provided investigators with a recording of the moments of the attack, in which, according to Quispe's relatives, he can be seen surrounded by a dozen children. Police interrogations and tracking of the numerous surveillance cameras surrounding the main street where the incident occurred ultimately led to the arrest of two people. At the moment it is only known that one of them is 21 years old and lives in A Coruña.
The arrests were “the result of intensive work,” said María Rivas, government sub-delegate in A Coruña. Rivas said the case is ongoing and that investigators are continuing to work to “identify additional individuals who may be involved.” She herself called the victim's family to inform them of the status of the investigation and to express “all her solidarity and affection” to them. People close to Quispe called for a rally on Christmas Day to demand “justice” for the lack of arrests following the boy's stabbing attack. “From the first moment, the investigation was launched without wasting a minute to find out what happened and to bring those responsible to justice,” Rivas defended after the arrests on Thursday.
Yoel Quispe's crime shocked the Peruvian community of A Coruña. Also to the football club Deportivo Cristal, in whose ranks the young man played for several seasons. Quispe worked as a waiter and, as people close to him said publicly, his mother and one-year-old sister depended on his salary. Those close to the victim have launched a fundraising campaign to help them move on after the tragedy.
